Remember those good ol' days when you could resell what you bought? Ah, the memories.
I recently made the mistake of purchasing a game from Steam. Well, that's not entirely correct. Although the link said 'Purchase', and there was a picture of a game, what I actually purchased was a limited, terminable, non-exclusive license to use the software for my personal use in accordance with their agreement.
So after completing this game I tried to find how to give (resell) it to a friend. Sounds easy; I should just have to remove all my copies and give it to him. Unfortunately Steam does not allow you to resell games. The response from their support department was:
"As per the Steam Subscriber Agreement, Steam game subscriptions / CD keys are nontransferable and cannot be reset / moved between Steam accounts."
I can't actually find where in the agreement it prevents transferring a license. Perhaps the phrase 'for your personal use' is meant to convey that. The agreement states that I cannot transfer my account, or transfer reproductions of the software, neither of which seems to cover transferring a license. I replied asking them for more details, and await their reply.
This will be the last 'non-transferable' game I purchase from Steam.
